Blackened seasoning is a flavorful blend of spices commonly used for blackening meat and seafood that typically includes paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, cayenne, salt, and black pepper. This is our GO-TO recipe for blackened seasoning. So much so, that we like to make a lot at once to have ready to go for future recipes. Technically, you can use this rub on any type of meat however, our favorite thing to use it on is any type of white fish, salmon, crab meat, shrimp or the similar. Before you get started, I recommend double checking you have all spices in advance since this calls for a good amount as we’re making a larger amount so you have enough for a few dishes.
Blackened seasoning can have variations in the types of spices use and how much is used. For this recipe, we’ll be using the ingredients listed below. It's super easy. Just mix it up and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. We reused a small jam jar for ours and like to keep it above our stove. It has a small kick but if you want it a little spicier, just add a little more cumin.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup paprika
- 1/4 cup black pepper
- 1/4 cup oregano
- 1/4 cup garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons sea salt
- 1 teaspoon cumin
